We have a new coach with over 25 years of experience coaching professionally and at the collegiate level, so this is a great opportunity for our students.
About the Coach: Koua Xiong - JV Coach
I don’t have as much experience coaching, but this is my 4th year teaching at Humboldt, and I have 3 years of experience coaching girl’s tennis. Overall, I’m a pretty cool teacher and a laid-back coach, so I’m looking forward to meeting you!
On Saturday, March 6th at Highland Park, the Humboldt wrestling team avenged their only loss of the season and defeated Highland Park 53-21 to win the Saint Paul City Conference title! Their overall conference record was an impressive 11 wins and only one loss! This is the first Humboldt wrestling city conference championship in 32 years!
Coach Novacheck and Coach Bonds ('13) deserve a lot of credit for keeping this team together during a global pandemic and building the confidence and skills necessary to be a champion. Coach Novacheck said, "this was never about winning, this was about teaching the wrestlers how to become champions and act like champions". They did just that on Saturday. Senior captain Crown Htoo was ecstatic. He credited the team for staying together during the highs and lows of the season and never giving up on each other.
It was a total team effort to secure the win versus Highland Park. Some wrestlers who were expected to get pins did not, while other wrestlers who were deemed underdogs in their match came up huge with pins.
The team is very happy about the conference championship, but they recognize their work is far from over. The section tournament is next week, and we have wrestlers with a very good chance to go to state. The Humboldt athletic department, teachers, staff, and community are very proud of this significant accomplishment.

Xavier is a very humble person and he told me he felt shock and a great sense of joy to reach this significant milestone. He was motivated to work towards the 1,000-point club when he saw another player do it his freshman year. Xavier said, “with everything going on this year with COVID it was very special to reach this goal with Brian and with Humboldt.” We’re hoping Brian and Xavier motivate many of our younger players as well.
The Humboldt athletic department, teachers, staff, and community are very proud of Xavier and his accomplishments and we look forward to watching this dynamic team as they enter postseason play.

The AAA award recognizes and rewards high school seniors from across the state for their achievements in the classroom, the arts, and athletics. To qualify for the award, students must have a "B" or better grade point average and participate in League-sponsored athletic and fine arts activities.
The League will be recognizing all Tiple 'A' Finalists at a virtual event where the winners of the state award will be announced. Award finalists and winners will be recognized virtually during the televised Boys and Girls Basketball Championship Games on April 9-10 on KSTC-45.
Lay Lay played tennis, cross-country, and badminton. She has a 4.67 weighted grade point average and will have her associate's degree prior to graduating this June. She was selected for the District All-Honors choir and a member of the Tri-M Honors Society. She is also the Lieutenant Colonel in JROTC and is the Special Projects Officer responsible for organizing the Military Ball.
The Humboldt community is very proud of her achievements and a special thank you to the teachers and coaches who have guided her along the way.
Go Hawks!

In 2016, The Hawks wrestling team went 0-6 throughout conference play, with little to no team pride. Today, your Hawks wrestlers are tied with Highland Park for first place in the conference and are firing on all cylinders. Even without fans, the match on Wednesday night against Central and Harding was electric. The Hawks made short work of Central, keeping them scoreless throughout the entire meet; an impressive feat. The highlight of the match came during the heavyweight bout, as the first-year wrestler, Sam Smith went up against what appeared to be the best wrestler on Central’s roster. Sam battled, and was able to secure his first-ever pin! The Hawks then went on to wrestle the much stronger Harding team, which was a much tighter match. While the Hawks led for most of the night, Harding refused to go away. Senior Poh Say did his best against one of the top wrestlers in the conference, Miles Lee of Harding high school, and managed not to get pined. This seemed to be a turning point in the evening, as it was followed by three straight pins from Crown Htoo, Tha Gay, and Hser Ku Htoo. The three pins gave the Hawks 18 quick points, and the Knights were never able to recover. Your Hawks now await a showdown on March 6th with Highland Park to determine the conference champion. If the Hawks are successful, it will be the first conference championship for Humboldt Wrestling since 1989. An incredible thank you is warranted to Head Coach Brad Novacheck who has not only turned the program around but turned it into a conference powerhouse. Go win that title Hawks!
Boys Basketball
The Boys basketball team returns to action after a short COVID19 related delay this Saturday at home against Washington. The Hawks are still very much in the hunt for the conference title, and a win on Saturday will put them in a tie with Central for first place in the conference. Good luck to coach Garcia and the Boys Basketball team!
Girls Basketball
The Girls Basketball team currently sits in third place in the conference trailing Central by only a game. They defeated Washington on Thursday night. The Hawks are back in action on Monday night against the first place Como Park Cougars and have the opportunity to be the only team in the conference to beat them.
Boys Swimming
The boys swimming team ends their regular season tonight, Friday 2/26/21 against Como Park. A Big Shout out is deserved for Coach Gill, who has kept her team competing and having fun throughout a tough year for the Hawks. Thank you, Coach Gill!
...with Humboldt trailing Highland Park 87-86 with 10 seconds remaining in the game, Brian dribbled the ball down the court and was fouled while driving to the basket with 1.6 seconds left on the clock.
He now had two free throws to either tie, win, or lose the game. Most players would crack under the pressure, but not Brian. Brian stepped up to the free-throw line and made BOTH free throws! Highland Park heaved a half-court shot as time expired and missed. Hawks win 88-87!

Girls Basketball Preview
To begin with, Head coach and Humboldt alum Tyler Chavez returns all but one starter on the girls basketball team. Point guard Ilianese DeLaRosa and shooting guard Makalya Mapp return to headline the Hawks Offense, while Underclassman Jocelyn Mann looks to be the defensive stopper for the team. The Girls earned the number two seed in a competitive section last winter and have high expectations for this upcoming season.
Boys Basketball Preview
The Boys basketball team had the opposite happen, as almost the entire roster graduated in 2020. With that said, coach Garcia is confident in this season’s group. He returns Leading scorer Brian Williams, and combo Guard Keith Pabon to bring some leadership to the group. In addition, a surprise Senior transfer in Xavier Garcia will help sure up the Hawks line-up, as he was St. Croix Lutheran’s top man last season. Watch for the boys basketball team to put quite a few teams on upset alert this winter.
Wrestling
Boys wrestling looks to continue to be a constant St. Paul Powerhouse this winter. Lead by coach Brad Novacheck, the Hawks return a strong roster headlined by three ranked wrestlers in Crown Htoo, Kyaw Htway and Po Si Si. Watch for Senior Pa Ha to possibly fill the shoes of heavyweight graduate Ryan Prisch, a notable graduate for the Hawks. The Hawks wrestlers will call the Open World Learning Campus home for this winter, and have already laid out their mats. Coach Novacheck was eager to move the seemingly heavy mats and get everything set up on Friday. “Nothing sounds more fun to me than hauling mats around on a Friday morning - I could do this all day,” said coach Novacheck.
Boys Swimming
Boys swimming looks to build off the success that the girls had this fall, with coach Caitlyn Gill leading both squads. While the boys team lacks some of the experience that the girls have, a few swimmers stood out last winter, and look to make a bigger splash this time around. Senior Eh Ler Moo was a first time swimmer last winter, but really took to the sport earning an all-conference honorable mention. He returns alongside team captain Elliot McNally, who was as smooth as could be in the water last season. Watch for these two to have a breakout season this time around. While our PI/CI athletes and coaches are sad that they cannot compete in person this winter, we as a Hawk community are very thankful and proud of coaches Vibar, Bohland and Long for keeping the teams connected digitally.
Thanks for all that you do!

This year, Humboldt High School scholars took part in the ‘We Scare Hunger” food drive and collected items to be distributed to those in need. The HHS team scared away hunger by raising awareness on the issue of food insecurity. Scholars rallied friends to collect food for local food banks. Next year you can help create a world where no one goes hungry. Find out more about WE SCARE HUNGER here.

McCambell was the top wide receiver on the team last fall as only a sophomore, and was primed to have a break out Junior season prior to injuring himself in the Hawks’ first match. All hope is not lost however with the rest of the youth movement on the Hawks’ roster, headlined by sophomore running back Obadiah Chea. Chea will headline the Hawks’ offense the coming fall with some impressive breakaway speed.
In addition, another new aspect of the Football team this fall is the inclusion of OWL athletes. This is adds to an already strong partnership between the two schools, as it becomes the 12th Co-op sport between the two institutions. The fresh faces from OWL have brought in additional young talent,
including 8th grade Lineman Noah Hayes. While Hays is only a middle school athlete, he towers over the opposition, standing at a whopping 6 feet 2 inches tall. The new look Hawks look to build on last year’s successes, as well as pave a way for future success with this young cohort. The Hawks next game is Friday November 6th, agains St. Paul Johnson. The game will be held at Bakken Field at Harding High School.

Congratulations to John Pucci and Mario Luna for being named St. Paul City Conference Coach of the Year! John coaches the Humboldt Boys' Soccer team who finished second place in the conference with a 5-1 record and an impressive 7-3-3 overall record. It was a great year for the team and even better to see coach Pucci recognized for all the work he puts in.
Mario Luna won the Boys Cross Country coach of the year award. He did a great job motivating his team who got faster with each meet. In his first-year coaching, during a pandemic, Coach Luna was able to recruit and maintain more boys than in previous years.

Girls Soccer begins section play in a slightly different fashion this week, as they will participate in pool play as opposed to single elimination. The Girls open section play on Wednesday, 10/14 against Hiawatha Collegiate Academy at 4:15 on the Humboldt Turf.
While the Cross Country conference season may have ended last week, Coach Luna has been preparing his teams for a strong showing in sections. The teams will run this Wednesday, 10/14/20 against the other SPPS teams in their sectional race. Good luck XC!
Girls Swimming finished their season with a .500 record, earning four wins and four losses in conference play. They have been preparing for both the conference meet, which takes place on 10/14/20, as well as their sectional tournament which will take place on Friday October 23rd.

The Hawks kicked off their season last week with a home match against a tough conference rival, St. Paul Johnson. While the Hawks played a tight match, they were ultimately faced with defeat. They had a similar result against another tough conference foe in Harding on Monday, 10/12, but the resiliency of the Hawks’ Volleyball girls is outstanding. They have been training hard all week in preparation for their next opponent, Highland Park, who they will face off with on Wednesday, 10/14. Best of luck in that match, and congratulations on getting your season back Volleyball!
