I don’t have as much experience coaching, but this is my 4th year teaching at Humboldt, and I have 3 years of experience coaching girl’s tennis. Overall, I’m a pretty cool teacher and a laid-back coach, so I’m looking forward to meeting you!

Humboldt will wrestle against South St. Paul for the 4AA Section Championship in Round 1 of the MSHSL State Prelims this Saturday at Cretin Durham Hall. If we beat South St. Paul, then we would wrestle the 1AA Champions.

“Let us go, and let fly…” They sang as they sharpened their swords and spears. “Where our friends the conflict shares, were they triumph, where they die.” My sisters chanted, as they perfected their aim with each arrow they fired. I wish they all knew their fates, as I did…
My name is Astrid.
And I am the last Valkyrie.
What happened? There was a tragic war… though my sisters fought to the very end, and faced death without fear. It was not enough. I was a Valkyrie yet I was not ready for battle. I was nothing more than a young girl. While my sisters fought for honor, glory, and to lead men to the great hall, I was fighting merely for my survival. My eldest sister, Rayla forced me from battle and hid me away. “This is not your purpose, child.” She said as I was tranced, and forced into sleep. When I awoke, the war was over… but I was born an only child. My mother, a shield. My father, a spear. The weapons I fell into slumber with. I was awakened to a strange, new world. The world I knew, of gods, of honor, and of the old traditions, gone. My sisters, my home, and my life had all disappeared. It was a world full of new technology and people. Mankind didn’t worship the gods as they once did, and those that did worship a god I don’t recognize. In little time, I’ve learned that the war that I was forced to sleep through… was over one-thousand years ago. Which is when I realized, I was the last of the Valkyrie sisters.
Why Rayla? Why was I trapped for so long? Why did I awake only now?
What is my purpose now?
It's been eleven months… I still am uncertain of this place. But I’ve spent my time here tirelessly learning. History, language, culture even, with each passing day, this possibility of a new future for me draws ever closer. This life, it may not be what I have known, but this strange, new life has been… well how do you explain such a situation such as mine? The clothing is different, the philosophies are more progressive, people seem to be more free though this new bureaucracy has control over… almost everything. I’m unsure of how I feel about that. Especially saying that their “laws” as they are called, limit my freedom of flight. But, my wings... men of this time are not used to seeing such things, or at least not as often as I present them. Weapons in this time are forbidden to carry. Something I never thought I’d ever heard in my entire life. Men would carry weapons as often as they wear clothes in my time. But it is for good reason. Man's technology has advanced far beyond anything I ever even imagined. Its destructive power should be something only the gods can achieve. And so it seems that power has been used too often now. Man has lost his way through all this death and destruction. Fighting to destroy their enemies, rather than protect their loved ones. They seem doomed…
But…
I have hope.
I’ve seen what man can do at its best.
I’ve met those with gifts of power obtained possibly by the gods. I have encountered them many times when dealing with the threats of man. While they may not be my sisters, they are true warriors. They are of mankind but are its greatest champions.
There is one who moves as fast as Hermóðr, another warrior with the magic and deception of Loki.
And… a woman. One who named herself after the goddess of the sun. Sól.
I often do not applaud any mockery of the gods, but she does not mock. The goddess would be proud of this woman. She embraces her power, her very skin is engulfed in flames as she gracefully flies through the air. I was graced with her presence, as she was mine. Our Norse similarities gave us a deeper understanding of each other. After our last encounter, many of these “heroes” as they are called, extended a hand to have me join their legion. I… have not decided.
I know Rayla, looks to me from Asgard.

“Weave the crimson web of war.” I could hear my sisters singing.
This is the Song of the Valkyrie. When it is sung, I must call to arms, and protect mankind.

On Saturday, March 6th at Highland Park, the Humboldt wrestling team avenged their only loss of the season and defeated Highland Park 53-21 to win the Saint Paul City Conference title! Their overall conference record was an impressive 11 wins and only one loss! This is the first Humboldt wrestling city conference championship in 32 years!
Coach Novacheck and Coach Bonds ('13) deserve a lot of credit for keeping this team together during a global pandemic and building the confidence and skills necessary to be a champion. Coach Novacheck said, "this was never about winning, this was about teaching the wrestlers how to become champions and act like champions". They did just that on Saturday. Senior captain Crown Htoo was ecstatic. He credited the team for staying together during the highs and lows of the season and never giving up on each other.
It was a total team effort to secure the win versus Highland Park. Some wrestlers who were expected to get pins did not, while other wrestlers who were deemed underdogs in their match came up huge with pins.
The team is very happy about the conference championship, but they recognize their work is far from over. The section tournament is next week, and we have wrestlers with a very good chance to go to state. The Humboldt athletic department, teachers, staff, and community are very proud of this significant accomplishment.

Xavier is a very humble person and he told me he felt shock and a great sense of joy to reach this significant milestone. He was motivated to work towards the 1,000-point club when he saw another player do it his freshman year. Xavier said, “with everything going on this year with COVID it was very special to reach this goal with Brian and with Humboldt.” We’re hoping Brian and Xavier motivate many of our younger players as well.
The Humboldt athletic department, teachers, staff, and community are very proud of Xavier and his accomplishments and we look forward to watching this dynamic team as they enter postseason play.

The AAA award recognizes and rewards high school seniors from across the state for their achievements in the classroom, the arts, and athletics. To qualify for the award, students must have a "B" or better grade point average and participate in League-sponsored athletic and fine arts activities.
The League will be recognizing all Tiple 'A' Finalists at a virtual event where the winners of the state award will be announced. Award finalists and winners will be recognized virtually during the televised Boys and Girls Basketball Championship Games on April 9-10 on KSTC-45.
Lay Lay played tennis, cross-country, and badminton. She has a 4.67 weighted grade point average and will have her associate's degree prior to graduating this June. She was selected for the District All-Honors choir and a member of the Tri-M Honors Society. She is also the Lieutenant Colonel in JROTC and is the Special Projects Officer responsible for organizing the Military Ball.
The Humboldt community is very proud of her achievements and a special thank you to the teachers and coaches who have guided her along the way.

In 2016, The Hawks wrestling team went 0-6 throughout conference play, with little to no team pride. Today, your Hawks wrestlers are tied with Highland Park for first place in the conference and are firing on all cylinders. Even without fans, the match on Wednesday night against Central and Harding was electric. The Hawks made short work of Central, keeping them scoreless throughout the entire meet; an impressive feat. The highlight of the match came during the heavyweight bout, as the first-year wrestler, Sam Smith went up against what appeared to be the best wrestler on Central’s roster. Sam battled, and was able to secure his first-ever pin! The Hawks then went on to wrestle the much stronger Harding team, which was a much tighter match. While the Hawks led for most of the night, Harding refused to go away. Senior Poh Say did his best against one of the top wrestlers in the conference, Miles Lee of Harding high school, and managed not to get pined. This seemed to be a turning point in the evening, as it was followed by three straight pins from Crown Htoo, Tha Gay, and Hser Ku Htoo. The three pins gave the Hawks 18 quick points, and the Knights were never able to recover. Your Hawks now await a showdown on March 6th with Highland Park to determine the conference champion. If the Hawks are successful, it will be the first conference championship for Humboldt Wrestling since 1989. An incredible thank you is warranted to Head Coach Brad Novacheck who has not only turned the program around but turned it into a conference powerhouse. Go win that title Hawks!
Boys Basketball
The Boys basketball team returns to action after a short COVID19 related delay this Saturday at home against Washington. The Hawks are still very much in the hunt for the conference title, and a win on Saturday will put them in a tie with Central for first place in the conference. Good luck to coach Garcia and the Boys Basketball team!
Girls Basketball
The Girls Basketball team currently sits in third place in the conference trailing Central by only a game. They defeated Washington on Thursday night. The Hawks are back in action on Monday night against the first place Como Park Cougars and have the opportunity to be the only team in the conference to beat them.
Boys Swimming
The boys swimming team ends their regular season tonight, Friday 2/26/21 against Como Park. A Big Shout out is deserved for Coach Gill, who has kept her team competing and having fun throughout a tough year for the Hawks. Thank you, Coach Gill!
